Bridgeport
Buttermilk Blend Trail
South Yuba River Canyon
Trailhead: Off Pleasant Valley Road upstream
of Bridgeport, north side of river. A favorite
wildflower hike in March, April and May. Offers
nice views of the river canyon.

Yuba River Independence Trail
South Yuba River Canyon
Trailhead: Hwy. 49 .5. miles northwest of
Nevada City. Trail follows alignment of the
Excelsior Canal, built during the Gold Rush.

Rock
Creek Nature Trail
Tahoe National Forest
Trailhead: Off access road, 7 miles east of
Nevada City. This interpretive trail has been
used for many years in school nature study
programs. Native plants and trees are identified.
Brochures are available at the trailhead.

Hard
rock Trail
Empire Mine State Historic Park
Trailhead: Empire Mine Visitor Center. Visitors
enter through the visitor center must pay
admission. Free entry is allowed by parking
at the Pennsylvania Gate equestrian staging
area. This trail is the only one in the park
for hikers only; no mountain bikers or equestrians
are allowed. Dogs must be leashed. Trail maps
are available at the visitor center.

Hill Trails
Empire Mine State Historic Park
Trailhead: Hwy 174 at Empire Street
Area is peppered with old mine sites and includes
the pipeline that brought water to the mines.

center.

Yuba River Trail
South Yuba River Canyon
Trailhead: Eight miles northeast of Nevada
City, off North Bloomfield Rd. Trail passes
through Gold Rush remains. Trail can also
be accessed from Purdon Crossing. Hiking,
horseback riding, and picnic sites.

Rim
Trail
Trailhead: North Bloomfield Road or Malakoff
campground. Parking. Views of the Malakoff
hydraulic diggings. Pine and cedar forests.
Pets must be leashed.

Diggins
Loop Trail
Trailhead: Diggins overlook, North Bloomfield
Road. Trail loops through what was once the
largest hydraulic mining operation in the U.S.

Bike Riding
Augistine
Agony
Trailhead: Nevada City Advanced 7-10 physical,
3-6 technical. Ride up Cement Hill Rd, turn
right at Augustine Rd and then keep left all
the way down to the South Yuba River. AFter
a swim, attempt to climb back out.

Banner
Mountain Trail
Trailhead: Nevada City Intermediate 4 physical,
3 technical. Start at Sacramento St. and the
freeway. Ride Railroad Ave past the NOrthern
Queen Inn to Gold Flat Rd. Turn left, then
right on Gracie Rd. Turn left at Banner Mountain
Trail, pass the gun club and ride to the top
of Banner Mountain. Return on pavement via
Banner Lava Cap.

Lower
Pioneer Trail
Trailhead: 4 physical, 4 technical Park at
Harmony Ridge Market or at the horse staging
area off Hwy 20, one mile east across from
Lone Grave.

Empire
Mine State Park
Trailhead: 3-6 physical 1-4 technical West
gate at hilltop, off Empire St. Wooded trails
with easy to challenging terrain. Traverse
California's richest gold mine, on both sides
of Hwy. 174.

Upper
Pioneer Trail
Trailhead: White Cloud Campground 6 physical,
6 technical This trail parallels Hwy 20 on the
south side and drifts farther from the why than
the lower section. Ride to Skillman Campground
and back, or for a linger ride, to Chalk Bluff
Rd. The trail is fairly rugged and mildly technical
single track.

Buckeye
Loop
Trailhead: 6 physical, 3 technical Cascade Shores
General Store, ride east on Quaker Hill Rd,
turn right on Greenhorn and right again on Buckeye
Rd. Cross Greenhorn Creek, turn right on Red
Dog Rd, stay right to Quaker Hill and descent
to Cascade Shores.

Casci
Ranch Loop
Trailhead: 4-6 physical, 3-4 technical Five
Mile House. Riders invited to park at Harmony
Ridge Market. Follow the Pioneer Trail on
the north side of the highway four miles east
to Casci Ranch Rd. Turn right, descend to
Scott's Flat Reservoir. Return to Five Mile
House via Scott's Flat Rd.

Yuba Trail
Trailhead 6 physical, 6 technical Round Mountain
Trailhead located off Round Mountain Rd. A fun
and challenging single-track ride with views
of the South Yuba River. At one time the trail
was posted as a clockwise riding circuit, but
these days most riders seem to prefer a counter-clockwise
direction. From Round Mountain, turn left at
the South Yuba Trail, left at Lake Vera-Purdon
Rd, left again at Rector Rd, left at Rock Creek
Rd. and return on Round Mountain Rd.
